A worked example: the $15 message
Send a $15 PPV to 400 subscribers. At a 10% unlock rate, 40 fans buy: $600 gross, $480
after the fee. Lift the unlock rate to 20% — same price, same list — and it is $1,200
gross, $960 net. The price did not move; the conversation before the offer did.
Now try the price instead: $25 at 10% is $1,000 gross from the same list. Better than
$600 — but notice it still loses to the warmer list at $15. That ordering holds across
most realistic inputs, which is why the unlock-rate slider above deserves more attention
than the price slider.
Most PPV sells between $5 and $25. Price against what the fan already spends: a regular tipper absorbs a higher price than someone who subscribed yesterday. Sending the same price to everyone is what kills unlock rates.
What is a good PPV unlock rate?
Ten to thirty percent on a warm list is normal. If you are far below that, the price is usually not the problem, the lack of conversation before the offer is.
